Racial Justice Fellowship

Muslim Advocates (MA) is seeking applicants for a newly-created Racial Justice Fellowship and encourages recent law school graduates to apply.

Through the creation of this Racial Justice Fellowship, MA seeks to expand and deepen its work that is reflective of the racial and ethnic diversity that exists within the American Muslim community.  To that end, the Racial Justice Fellow will develop legal advocacy strategies for protecting the rights of American Muslim communities of color. The Racial Justice Fellow will be expected to work in a number of subject matter areas, including but not limited to racial/religious profiling, criminal justice, religious liberty, and economic justice.  The Racial Justice Fellow will also be responsible for coordinating MA’s racial justice work and will play a pivotal role in ensuring that issues of racial justice are incorporated into MA’s broader advocacy efforts.

The fellowship will last for a 24-month term. During that time, the Racial Justice Fellow will serve as a member of MA’s legal team and will be based in MA’s Washington, DC office.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and coordinate MA’s legal strategies aimed at addressing the particular needs of American Muslim communities of color.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis; draft and prepare legal memoranda and other legal documents.
  • Contribute to MA’s racial justice policy and advocacy efforts.  
  • Build relationships and identify primary areas of legal advocacy within American Muslim communities of color.
  • Work with MA staff attorneys and other staff members on trial and appellate litigation in state and federal courts.
  • Conduct interviews with witnesses and potential MA clients.
  • Create non-legal advocacy materials in support of MA’s public education and outreach efforts.
  • Other projects related to MA’s legal, policy, and public education work as they arise.

  • Demonstrated commitment to racial justice, protecting civil rights, and addressing issues of inequality.
  • Outstanding research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to engage effectively with diverse communities and constituencies.
  • Commitment to MA’s mission.
