Indianapolis, Indiana – Today, the organization building the Islamic Life Center in Carmel, Indiana, represented by Muslim Advocates, filed a motion to intervene in a legal challenge related to its right to build a mosque in Carmel.

For years, the Al-Salam Foundation has been trying to build a house of worship for the local Muslim residents. After applying for a special use permit with the Carmel Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) to build the proposed property, the foundation was met with intense scrutiny and opposition–even though similar permits were granted for nearby houses of worship without any recorded opposition.  After a protracted public hearing process, the BZA voted to approve the foundation’s permit on February 26, 2018, before a packed audience at the Palladium auditorium in Carmel.

Following  the BZA’s approval, some of the opposition filed a legal challenge against the BZA for approving the application. By intervening in the suit, the Al-Salam Foundation is ensuring that it can fully protect its rights, including its right to have a house of worship in Carmel.
