Muslim Advocates Files Amicus Brief in Case Against Arizona Immigration Law

(October 7, 2010) SAN FRANCISCO -- Muslim Advocates joins more than two dozen other organizations in filing an amicus brief supporting the plaintiffs' request for a preliminary injunction against SB 1070, Arizona's highly controversial immigration statute.

This lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of this recently passed law that invites racial profiling, violation of the First Amendment and an interference with the federal law.

The state law can potentially encourage discrimination against communities of color, especially Latinos, since Mexico is the nearest bordering country. The potential for discrimination against Muslim-Americans of all ethnicities in Arizona also exists. The bill also threatens public safety in Arizona, since communities of color--fearing immigration inquiries--are very likely to report crime less, making their neighborhoods increasingly unsafe.
