Muslim Advocates Files Amicus Brief in Computer Destruction Case

Muslim Advocates filed an amicus brief in the lawsuit Kam-Almaz v. United States in the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on September 1st, supporting Majd Kam-Almaz's lawsuit to be compensated for the destruction of his laptop by Customs and Border Protection.

Mr. Kam-Almaz, a U.S. citizen who works in the area of disaster relief services, had his business computer seized at Dulles Airport while returning home after work travel. His computer was destroyed while in the possession of border agents and he subsequently lost contracts of substantial value. He filed suit to recover his losses after his administrative claim to be compensated for the damage to his computer was denied.

Muslim Advocates continues to advocate for the rescission of the policy that allows border agents to search and seize electronic devices of travelers without probable cause. The amicus brief argues that individuals whose electronic devices are damaged or destroyed while in the possession of border agents should be compensated for their loss.

Muslim Advocates thanks the law firm Latham & Watkins LLP for its generous pro bono support in preparing the amicus brief.
