Communications & Outreach Director

Muslim Advocates (MA) seeks a Communications and Outreach Director to coordinate the organization's national public presence.

Muslim Advocates (www.muslimadvocates.org) is a national educational and advocacy organization based in San Francisco, CA. Its mission is to use legal advocacy, policy engagement, and education to promote and protect equality, liberty and justice for all, regardless of faith, and to promote the full and meaningful participation of Muslims in American public life. Muslim Advocates is a dynamic, growing organization created by a group of experienced American Muslim lawyers and policy experts to address some of the most pressing civil rights and human rights challenges facing our nation today.

The Communications and Outreach Director will play a critical role in:

  1. shaping and implementing communications strategies to promote MA's work in pursuit of its mission; and
  2. cultivating MA's network of lawyers, law students, Muslim community leaders, and other allied groups and leaders in pursuit of MA's mission and programs.

Responsibilities

  • Work with program directors to define effective media and outreach strategies for our projects combating racial and religious profiling and strengthening Muslim charities
  • Plan and implement media activities for these programs, including press advisories, press releases, statements, op-eds and talking points and pitching stories to targeted media
  • Implement outreach strategy, especially cultivating MA's network of lawyers and law students, as well as Muslim community leaders and other allies, and leveraging these voices in support of MA programs
  • Manage online communications, including a redesigned website, blog, and periodic announcements to supporters
  • Coordinate discussions among allied groups to respond rapidly to breaking news and events
  • Respond to media inquiries; develop relationships with reporters and media

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 2-3 years of communications experience, especially media relations, drafting press releases, op-eds, talking points and media strategies for social justice causes
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • High level of initiative, reliability, creativity and strategic thinking
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Established relations with media organizations preferred
  • Community outreach and organizing preferred
  • Experience managing and maintaining online content; familiarity with Movable Type a plus
  • A strong commitment to social justice and Muslim Advocates' values and mission

Compensation / Benefits
